Emgage Texas Legislative Director

Founded in 2006, Emgage achieved national prominence in 2020 by hosting candidate Joe Biden at its Emgage Action Summit and helping turn-out over one million Muslim voters during the 2020 Million Muslim Votes Campaign. The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C. with chapters in Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Texas, and New York. As a leading Get Out The Vote (GOTV) and social justice/human rights issue advocacy organization, Emgage has a network of partnerships with local and state grassroots organizations across the country. Emgage also has strategic partnerships and works in coalitions with a diverse set of leading national organizations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

This individual will be responsible for researching and identifying legislative and policy priorities of the Texas chapter in coordination with the Texas State Committee and National Legislative Director. They will serve as a representative of Emgage Texas in Austin during legislative session and maintains contact with elected officials throughout the state year-round. Coordinates and assists with other Texas chapter initiatives as necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

● Researches and identifies primary legislative and policy priorities during the Texas
Legislative Session. This would include reviewing and monitoring bills during the session
and identifying bills that affect Texan Muslims
● Identifies and prioritizes elected officials and candidates for elected office to meet; helps
build rapport and relationships
● Schedules and coordinates lobby/advocacy visits
● Creates internal policy briefs, educational materials for prioritized, and “leave behind”
one-pagers when meeting with elected officials
● Provides weekly and monthly legislative updates to the national and local staff, State
committee and policy committee
● Works with and builds relationships with partner organizations around the state
● Coordinate community education and outreach including planning, organizing, and
participating in town halls, candidate forums, fundraisers, and other community events,
including the Austin City Wide Iftar; assists and supports Austin’s community events
● Assists with hiring, on-boarding, and managing interns as needed
● Works extensively with National Legislative Director and Texas State Committee
● Assists with state-wide endorsement process
● Ability to assist in social media outreach as needed
● Additional duties as needed by the Emgage Texas chapter

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS 

REQUIRED 
Political science or policy background; Experience with lobbying/advocacy; Understanding of
Texas Government and legislative process; Exceptional communication skills and ability to
engage in conversations and foster communication with other political organizations and
individuals; Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Strong problem solving skills; Excellent
organizational skills; Highly motivated, enthusiastic and reliable; Passion for politics;

PREFERRED 
Ability to work alone and as part of a team; Knowledge of basic office management procedures;
Public speaking skills; Experience with EveryAction and/or Canva software; Undergraduate or
post-graduate experience in community, political, or public outreach organizations

COMPENSATION 

Competitive salary commensurate with experience offered. Future growth opportunities with Emgage Texas and Emgage national organization also possible based on performance and availability. Position requires travel across Austin and frequently to the Texas Capitol (must have own transportation) and work on weekends and holidays. Preferred location
is Austin.
