Muslim Groups Host Food Packing Event for Needy

For over a decade, the Islamic Foundation of South Florida (IFSF) food pantry has assisted families in and around the City of Sunrise, regardless of their religious beliefs. Each month, volunteers from IFSF volunteer to pack food boxes that are distributed weekly on Mondays between 9am -1pm.

This month, the IFSF event will be co-sponsored by Emgage, a Muslim civic engagement organization. On 2/28, members from both organizations, and local elected officials, will volunteer to help pack twice as many boxes as they prepare two packages per family for support before and during Ramadan.

Local elected officials, including Dale Holness (Broward County Commissioner Dist 9) and Jaqueline Guzman (City of Sunrise Assistant Deputy Mayor) will join this event.

“The IFSF food pantry is here to help all those that express need, regardless of your color, origin or gender. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of families that stop by for assistance. At the same time, donations have been down, so we’ve had to scale back on providing a box with 4 weeks worth of food to everyone to a box that covers food for 2 weeks”. – Kauser Haroon, Director IFSF Food Pantry

“No matter our race, background or zip code, all of us are affected by the pandemic, which is why it’s very important to uplift the great works being done by local elected officials and groups like the Islamic Foundation of South Florida Food Pantry” – Ancel Pratt III, Emgage Florida Executive Director
