Emgage Action commemorates third anniversary of repeal of Muslim Ban

Washington, D.C.:  Emgage Action commemorates the third anniversary of the repeal of the Muslim Ban.

“The Muslim Ban has caused irreparable damage to Muslim communities domestically and abroad,” said Iman Awad, Deputy Director of Emgage Action. “While its dark legacy will remain and must be remembered, today, Emgage celebrates three years since the ban was rescinded by executive order.”

President Biden first vowed to end the Muslim Ban during Emgage Action’s “Million Muslim Votes” Summit in 2020. In his repeal of the ban, Biden wrote “We will not turn our backs on our values with discriminatory bans on entry into the United States.” The repeal of this unconstitutional ban was one of his first acts as president.

In both 2020 and 2021, Rep. Judy Chu introduced the NO BAN Act, which strengthens the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion, and restores the separation of powers by limiting overly broad executive authority to issue future travel bans. Emgage Action advocated strongly for this act; Emgage Action CEO Wa’el Alzayat was quoted in Rep. Chu’s announcement of the Act, saying, “While we celebrate President Biden’s repeal of the Muslim Ban, the work does not stop here: the passage of the No Ban Act is crucial to ensuring that no future president has the authority to institute such a ban.”

The NO BAN Act passed the House in both 2020 and 2021.
