Emgage Action responds to murder of Tyre Nichols ahead of footage release

WASHINGTON, DC: Emgage Action joins communities around the country in grief over the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man hospitalized after a confrontation with police during a traffic stop earlier this month.

“The level of police brutality against Black and Brown communities, and particularly against Black men, is a shame on our country and a monumental threat,” said Wa’el Alzayat, Emgage CEO. “The murder of Tyre is just one in a tragic history, and we refuse to stand by until justice is served.” 

Five officers have been arrested on charges including second-degree murder after being fired last week by the Memphis Police Department. The city plans to release video footage of the traffic stop later today. 

Emgage Action calls for peaceful protests in response to this heinous act and in response to the release of this footage. We also call for commonsense policies that must be taken in order to address ongoing police brutality. Many measures of accountability from local to federal levels have failed to be taken; this inaction is unacceptable. 

“We recognize that this is an incredibly difficult and heart wrenching time, but we remind everyone of the immense power of nonviolent protests and communities coming together against injustice,” said Alzayat.
