Emgage Action speaks out against Rep. Ilhan Omar committee vote result

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Emgage Action is dismayed at the results of the vote today to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from her assignment on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“This is an unacceptable move on the part of the House. These attacks by Speaker McCarthy are based in bigotry and the muzzling of free speech,” said Wa’el Alzayat, Emgage Action CEO. “As the first Black, Muslim, refugee woman elected to Congress, Rep. Omar would have been an asset to continue to serve on the Foreign Affairs Committee and its subpanel overseeing Africa. We need diverse voices when crafting impactful foreign policies and we should not cancel those voices because of partisan reasons.”

As we always have, Emgage Action intends to stand by our close ally, Rep. Omar, who, despite the constant barrage of bigoted attacks that she has endured through her years in Congress, continues to be an outspoken advocate for the rights of Black, Brown, and Muslim Americans and immigrant communities.
